Strut Tower Crack

There's a single hole in the middle of the piece of sheet metal that  
bends and breaks.

Honestly, does anyone think that little bit of metal does anything?   
It's pretty flimsy.  If it has a genuine purpose, that's great- but it  
sure doesn't look like it does much.  Then again, this is a car where  
there's a carefully designed dangly bit to prevent brake squeal...
