Oil filters

I've replaced a lot of oil filters in the nearly 20 years I've been driving Audis. Never had a problem getting a new one to seal. Today I'm changing the Avant filter and I start the engine to check for leaks. I have a flood. Filter was hand tight before I started the engine. Now it'll turn a bunch more. OK, refill, restart and I've got a gurgle and more flood. The rubber gasket is still on the old filter.

But, I realize the filter diameter is significantly different. I'd gotten several filters for V8s and for 200q20vs from a dealer source. The ones for the 200s have a part number 068115561B. The one I took off has no part number but says OC47 on it. Both are Mahle, I think. ETKA says use 034115561A. Looking at one of the larger ones, I see it says "for 1983 and earlier models". Did I get snookered? The rubber gasket sizes are identical on the larger ones and the 0C47 one. Do I just need to snug it down more than hand tight? I hate to use a wrench (strap type) on it and then have trouble getting it off later.

BTW, I did oil the gasket and fill the filter before installation.
