The new bearing [$24 from SJM] also has a steel cage. The new one has the 2
halves of the cage riveted together [tiny rivets], while the OE cage was sort
of crimped together with tabs. The new is an Audi part....and surprisingly
the seal was more expensive then the bearing [$36 from SMJ]. Once again, thanks
 for the help gentlemen!

That must be one old bearing that failed, having a steel ball cage,
haven’t seen one in many, many years. Plastic is the material of
choice now.
Using a press, no need to freeze the bearing, just lube with light
oil. And press it straight with the bore. Same with the seal.
