Ed,
I haven't had that problem myself (yet), but I seem to recall hearing 
that the symptom you describe (i.e., loss of charging at low-ish 
revs) might be caused by a break in the exciter wire (blue wire?) to 
the alternator. Easy to check it out anyway.
