not charging

I posted about this briefly several days ago in relation to an ignition
switch thread... I have a no-charge situation.  I checked the obvious and
then hit the Bentley.  I seem to have a problem with the exciter circuit.
Connections and belt were all tight and good.  
 
Exciter circuit amperage was around 20 when spec is 150-185.  
 
When I turn on the ignition, the battery light does not come on.  The
antilock light does but goes out almost immediately.  
 
Bentley points to IC or exciter wire between alternator and IC.  
 
237k on the clock.
 
Any ideas or helpful hints?
