Danny,
Does your car have the original clutch ? How long ago was the timing belt
done? UFOs in good shape? is the body free from rust? how much rubber is
left in your tires? In my opinion these would be my main considerations. (I
sometimes go over the same thoughts as you whenever a large expense comes
up)
Personally, I'd try and fix it....the coolant hose can be reached by
"simply" removing the power steering pump, not need to disconnect it, just
dismount it and move it slightly off to the side. Its not too bad a job, the
steering rack is the real killer.
