recommended viscosity

Up until my last oil change I used Rotella exclusively, alternating between
15w40 non-synth and 5w40 synth. I recently switched to the Delo because it
was cheaper than the non-synth Rotella. I usually only worry about thinner
oil for winter in my Avant and the GF's 90 V8. Lately, with both still
having the Delo in them, they have both felt very unmotivated to crank and
start in single digit weather.

I use the RotellaT synth in my F350 diesel. I had to top off both the Audi
and the F350 one cold winter day. The diference in "pourability" at 0 deg
between non-synth Delo 400 15/40 and Mobil 1 15w/50 is very noticeable. You
could almost slice the Delo while the Mobile 1 just poured as usual. Shortly
thereafter I switched to the RotellaT synth in the F350 - it starts fine
even at 25 below.

I was just debating what oil to use for winter. I have been using Rotella
synthetic 5W-40, but I balked at the price this time, not sure why. I was
thinking about alternatives and 10W-40 seemed a reasonable choice. Hadn't
thought about Syntec though. Do you recall the price? I was looking at
jugs, not quarts.
Also, agree re: the iPikes. Have a set on 3 different cars (all Quattro).

I'm in the Midwest and our weather is waaaaay worse than yours...I'm
joking, comparable temp-wise I suspect. I use 10w40 in winter, Syntec. What
have you done the previous 17 winters?
Put snows on today, Hankook Winter I-Pikes, wonderful snow tire IMO

For those of you living in the Northeast, what weight of oil do you
use? I've been using 15-50 full synthetic Red LIne, but I'm tempted
to make a change and run a lighter weight in my '91 200 20 v.
Although Red Line is pricey, I'll probably stick with it. It has not
been much of an issue in the past since I was using the car so little
but now I need it much more often, especially with the upcoming move
from NYC to southern VT. I've just passed the 130K mark (and I've had
the 200 since new) and I plan to see more than twice that amount of
mileage before I'm done with this car. Thanks. Scott
