Water Pump Installation

Kneale,

In three timing belt changes, two on the 200q, I have just cleaned the
surface with 1000 grit emory cloth, then lightly greased the outside surface
of the o-ring where it mates to the engine block to facilitate sliding while
I rotate the water pump to tension the belt. However, I have not had to
resolve the "grove" issue either....my blocks have always come out smooth
after the cleaning.

No leaks from any of my installations so far. There is minimal pressure
inside the cooling system, and a correctly torqued down water pump with a
fresh o-ring should have no need for extra sealants. In fact, it may be
possible that the sealant used by the previous replacement may have
contributed to your groove effect.

Alan
