Fuel Filters

Hello all;
I just bought a new Bosch fuel filter for my '91 200 20V TQ, and it is the
same Bosch part # as the one coming out of the car, 0 450 903 091, identical
in every way except for it has a brass fitting attached at the in side of
the filter that mine doesn't have.  Does anyone know what this is, or why
it's there?  I looked at pictures of filters on SJMautotechnik.com,
thepartsbin.com, autohausaz.com, and a couple others and they all show this
filter with the brass piece.
Can I just take out the brass piece, or is it supposed to be there?
Anyone else run into this??
