winter tires

Gotta buy new tires because my current ones are bald and it sucks to be slippin and sliding like everyone. I am definitely going to get all season ones ( I had posted an earlier comment about this), due to the fact that i cant afford to buy a set for winter now and then another set once it gets warmer. If by some chance i come into some money, how bad is it to run winter tires when there isnt any snow? Do they wear down faster or are they just not meant to go fast with?
