thermostat

As I recall, when my heater valve let loose, I had an immediate loss of coolant. It is possible that it is just leaking a little and that is where the odor is coming from - I had one of those also but I saw it leaking and replaced it. If the engine is warm, you will likely never see any puddles as it will evaporate as soon as it leaks onto a hot surface.

I was in Las Vegas, 900 miles from home when I lost the last one and used the piece of pipe trick to bypass it. I did not notice any loss of functionality by bypassing it.

If idling it will get up to mid gauge (2/3 maybe) and the aux fan will kick on.
Cruising on highway in the winter it gets into the 3 large hash marks on the left of the gauge.

does the coolant temp gauge ever get to normal? does the aux fan kick in when it gets to the middle-ish of the gauge?

I've detected the smell of coolant recently and am trying to trace it down. I'm not sure if it is the heater core or if it could be related to what is described below. I usually notice the coolant smell if the blower isn't running. If the blower is on I don't usually detect the smell, not sure why this happens.
If the heater control valve does fail, what are the symptoms? Also, if it is bypassed, what actually happens? What function does the valve perform?

I do get good heat from the vents. Also, I've recently replaced the temp diverter flap motor b/c it was stalling in some positions.

My gauge on the cluster usually reads low coolant temp and low oil temp.

Thanks

Nathan

Is the oil temp also low?

As I recall, Audi Thermostats are 80 and 87 deg C

Like Peter suggested - heater control valve? Easy to bypass. Use a 4-5 inch long 3/4in pipe nipple (99cents at home depot) and two hose clamps. It's good to carry one anyways if (when) the heater control valve eventually fails.

There has been a thread on thermostats already some time ago.
I have had a cold running car for a few Winters. I replaced the
thermostat a couple of times with no change. (It was not the sensor,
the air from the vents was cold.)
I tried it again this Winter with no change. I purchased an after
market 192º thermostat and it solved (?) the problem. The only
thermostat sold by Audi for this car must be a cooler one.
Until last night.
On a 12 mile trip, the coolant was cool.
On the return 12 mile trip after sitting for one hour, the coolant
was normal.

What am I missing here?
