Hey guys, I've actually heard of this happening to the cam gear. Mine wasn't like that when I took it off, but my crank cog was completely cracked in half which I also heard about. If it were me, I wouldn't take the chance of having it slip. Its better to spend $150 now than double that or more on a new head or head work. 

034 carries nice adjustable ones. I'm going to get one next time I have the valve cover off. Its easy enough to get at. I also have the hardened steel crank cog from Marc Swanson. Its expensive but totally worth it after hearing horror stories of broken cogs and after seeing mine completely on the verge of being destroyed AND the fact that a new factory one is almost $100 anyway.
