Okay the consensus is; it is a scary situation.
The key is part of the cast, powdered metal sprocket, not separate. It is so tiny it could only be for orientation. It was broken before I took it off. This car has had at least 3 timing belt jobs done, I have paperwork.
All mechanical degreed engineers I have asked, say the bolt and washer torque and friction carry the load through the camshaft
from the belt. The thickness of the washer and the size of the shoulder on the cam are very important. The length of the cam through the pulley is such that the bolt/washer bottoms out on the pulley and not the cam to the flange.
The horsepower and torque go through the crank to the tranny and the cam only travels at 1/2 the RPM. Only torque the pulley/shaft deals with is the friction and force needed to overcome valve springs and drive the distributor.
The key also can not come out and end up in the crankcase.
I say Son, let'r rip.
? If it does start to rotate off timing, adjustable cams drives give you + and - 5 degrees. I think you can run the cars one tooth off on the timing belt. How far off of the distributor alignment before the ecu gives no spark. Is that only at start up?

It’s not intended to keep the sprocket from slipping, just for
initial orientation. So, who neglected to tighten the center clamp
bolt sufficiently? Find a new wrench!
