200QA suddenly no start, no spark

Coils do indeed fail - BTDT many times. This is exactly the set of symptoms one would
experience with a coil failure, or something in the secondary or output stage side of
the ignition system including: Coil or Darlington Transistor ( POS) which is part of
the coil assembly, Coil wire, Distributor Cap or Rotor.
David has done enough preliminary trouble-shooting for now. The next thing to do is to
swap in a known good coil assembly including the transistor. Easy to do and should not
be expensive - I have some and so does Chris Semple.
If what you mean is the coils don't fail that much, but the POS (transistor) does, then
that is correct. The problem is probably not the coil itself, but the Darlington
Transistor that is mounted on the coil, but generally the assembly is referred to a the
coil by most.

Check to see that coil is getting 12v.
Coils rarely fail, unless there are VAG coil packs
