AFAIK:

AAN head has some tapped bosses on the front of the head for a cam position 
sensor.  That sensor is used for timing instead of having a distributor on the 
AAN.  The AAN has the hole for the distributor, Audi just puts a cover on it, 
you can put a distributor in if you want.

You can use a 3B head on a AAN block by welding on a tapped boss in the proper 
location.
You can use an AAN head on a 3B block by just bolting in a distributor.

So, almost identical.  Interchangeable from AAN > 3B block direct, just put in a 
distributor.  Almost interchangeable 3B > AAN (requires some modification).

interchangeable, correct?
Are they identical, or just interchangeable?
