power steering pumps: A1 Cardone versus ZF

Look in your Bentley, there are a bunch of round plugs that come our,
underneath are O-ring seals and springs with valves. It is really quite a
simple procedure. You need to buy a 1 inch drag link socket, round the corners
off with a grinder. Use an impact driver (the kind you hammer on) to
loosen them. My leaks were when the O-rings failed. There may be directions
on SJM's site. If your shaft seal is leaking, you will see it. If so be
very careful removing the pulley mount. It is easy to break it if you use
the wrong kind of puller.

I would only use the 11S, however others have used brand X fluids with
success.
Good Luck,

I presume you have a 91 200 20v. That was the list your post came on.

What can be leaking besides shaft seal? I don't understand your statement:
"If the pulley seal is not leaking, I would not mess
with it." Please explain.

Why did you not rebuild the pump, kit cost less than $20 and takes about
an
hour, piece of cake. If the pulley seal is not leaking, I would not mess
with it. Done mine twice in 239k,

Pete

Several years ago I somehow got ZF rebuild pump for around $200
(current price is 400+). Unfortunately it only appears to have lasted
about 15 hours on the track, don't have exact records.

Haven't had any leaks until I started occasional redline visits in
preparation for a new season. After a short time hydraulic fluid
started dripping from the pump...

I got the cheapest pump I could get, A1 Carbone from Rock Auto. So far
found two big problems.

1. Black paint is everywhere, including hose connections and all four
threaded mounting holes. Brake cleaner somewhat helped.
2. Pump was primed by something that resembles Dexron ATF and not the
Pentosin CHF 11S.

Pictures uploaded to my picasa album.

Will see how it works on the car tomorrow.
