What you are describing sounds exactly like the amplifier for the rear speakers
on a non-bose car.
I can probably take a picture of my old one and you can verify.

Subject: Back up lights
Hi all-
I am trying to locate a part # for the light control module on my 3B avant.
I have been chasing non-functional reverse lights. I tested and replaced the
switch on the transmission, which tested intermittently bad. I now get +12v
at both sides of the switch, but no current at either rear bulb. Grounds at
the bulbs test good.
There was a 6x2" black aluminum module on a silver bracket under the back
seat which I threw out assuming it was a factory amplifier for the non-Bose
avant system. I can not locate a part # for it, so am unsure as to what it
actually was. It is not the ABS acceleration control module, which sits next
to it. It is not the rear diff speed lock out relay.
Q: Why are the reverse lights not on a relay?
Q: Does this "Light control module" have multiple functions? Where is it
located in the avant?
Aloha,
Doc-
