Interesting. I'll have to try that next time. Running speaker wire really
wasn't that tough though. I fished it behind the knee bolster with a fish
tape, ran it along the wire bundle and through the same wire stays in the
trunk and used butt connectors to connect everything. I only installed rear
speakers to begin with. The stock speaker enclosers required just a tad of
modification to the bolt posts to match snugly with the speakers I chose,
and I used the same Bose speaker grills. The floating high and midrange
bits were centered in the opening and the bass it great as well. The only
real bugaboo in the whole thing was to get the deck to fit in the opening
because of the small ribs that are in the plastic to steady/snug the OE
deck. These had to be "machined" down. Also the opening is quite deep so I
used a hack saw blade to "relieve" each of the corners by cutting them up
about an inch or so. The DIN adapter sleeve fit in nice and snug and
everything is tight and rattle-free.
As soon as I have any substantial trouble with my other Bose systems, I
won't hesitate to go this route again and improve on the install.

Not true, about needing new speaker wires! Existing wires are
sufficient to drive old or new speakers directly from the HU,
bypassing the amps.
