Okay, guess I need to "weigh in".
Have had several type 44's, current one being the only 20v.
As stated by many, unless you're a wrench and can sort out the bugs pretty
quick don't expect a reliable DD (initially!). Once everything is sorted
out (to include half assed repairs by PO's) these cars are very reliable! I
originally migrated to an Audi as I was commuting apx 100 miles a day (for
ten years). These cars are long-legged and get reasonable fuel mileage.
Could have afforded a newer car, but 40-50k a year would greatly diminish
resale value. First 5000 went to 400k, second was over 300k and current 20v
has 285k. (Never used synthetic oil either, haha)
Breakdowns requiring tows...none! Did have a throttle cable break 50 miles
from home, turned up the "idle" , got up to 35 mph and used cruise to get
home via the NY thruway. Ignition switch tang broke, but got home.
Things usually requiring attention or hi mileage issues.
Hub bearings, ball joints, timing belts/water pumps, fuel pumps, ignition
switches, both brake and clutch hydraulics and lots of little electrical
glitches. Not to forget heater core and blowers..SJM covers the whole gamut
of genetic issues.
IMHO, get the 20v, use it as a "second car" while sorting out, then DD it.
They're very comfortable, run well and once sorted out are very dependable!
The drivetrain/engine and fuel injection if maintained are pretty trouble
free!
Maintenance and repairs are a lot cheaper than a car payment
