Straw Poll: How Dependable is Your 200q20v?

Matt -
I like Eric's take on things.
What I can say is I bought at 125K, it currently has 228K and I've never
had it towed or been stranded. However, I have always had a spare vehicle
within reach, and I think that is important. That and the Bentley Manual -
and, maybe, a VAG-COM.
The one time I was close to being stranded occurred because the auto
doorlock mechanism broke (I was down to one functioning doorlock back then),
and of course the doors were locked at the time. A friend with a slim-jim
came to the rescue. A $5 plastic part and an hour of time fixed that
problem.
Although the car is old and sorted out, it does require repayment parts
as things continue to wear. I hate going to the dealer for parts. I
repeat, I hate going to the dealer for parts. More often than not they
don't even have the parts in stock and then it is full retail plus 20% from
what I can tell. That is why you need a spare car if you want to maintain
the car economically. Most of the suppliers I use take 4-5 days to get
parts to me (if using free or standard shipping).
When all is said and done, it can be an almost daily driver, but it you
really need dependability, purchase a Hyundai with their 10/100K bumper to
bumper, and rest assured you have stacked the odds in your favor. However,
I'm not sure that the Hyundai will bring the same smile to your face that
these cars do.
Also, consider dismissing all I say because I really could be crazy as
now I own two of the beasts.
- Steve
P.S. Prior owner of new car did have it towed to get it started. I think it
sat too long unused as evidenced by only having slightly over 24K on it when
I purchased it in October.
