The damage seen in the photo is common because tends to happen if 
someone tries to get a peek at the timing belt condition by 
attempting to pry back the plastic cover without loosening the 
retaining bolt(s). One might've gotten away with doing this when the 
car was young, but as we sadly know, plastic parts often (in fact, 
"always") become embrittled over time.  People, too :-(
