Front seal on rear diff

Has anyone removed the pinion shaft assembly on the rear diff without
removing the rear diff from the rear suspension? My front seal is blown
pretty badly and all the chassis bolts back there for the rear
suspension assembly are badly corroded and I would really like to not
have to disturb all that stuff at the moment. The Bentley procedure is
pretty straight forward in terms of just undoing the bolts and pulling
the front cover out with light slide hammer blows in one of the axle
shaft bolt holes. So the question is whether the axle can be out of the
way enough and all the flange bolts can be accessed? And then if there
is enough room to withdraw the front cover with pinion, bearing, seal,
etc... together.
