Yes, you are correct about the winter wipers - they have a rubber sheath over the blade mechanism that prevents it from jamming up with ice/snow but the blade itself is no different than a standard blade.
I switched to silicone blades about a year ago and will never go back to standard blades. Silicone has a few advantages over standard blades:
-they remain pliable in very extreme temperatures
-they last several times longer
-they leave a very thin (not noticeable) silicone residue on the windshield that causes moisture to bead (i.e., not adhere to the windshield). It is a very similar effect to using RainX except that you never need to reapply!
I have PIAA blades. Silblades is the other main manufacturer. They are more expensive than standard blades but well worth the money IMO.
If you don't want to shell out the $$ for these blades, I'd recommend using RainX. It does a fantastic job at preventing moisture from adhering to the glass. The issue that most people have is that you really do need to reapply RainX every few weeks to prevent streaking and/or wiper chatter.
