Well ignition amplifier it was.  Ordered one from Blauparts.com, was 169.00 versus 530 from CF Audi.  Installed in seconds and is fixed problem.

BTW, I measured my old amp with the ohmmeter, and found #2 cylinder to be open thru the unit.  I read the test procedure on audiworld forums, but just didi this because i was sitting around looking for some speaker wire.
