[A4] 1.8T fuel consumption

Correct me if I'm wrong but you are using UK gallons, not US gallons,
right? So 28-29 Miles/UK gallon = 24 Miles/US gallon. 1.2 US gallons
= 1 UK gallon.

That sounds a little low for easy driving, but not unheard of. We get
about 25-27 very consistently with 50-50 mixed driving (city-highway).
Strictly highway may show 30mpg if we're lucky.

Have you played around with different octanes? We switched from 93
octane to 89 octane and actually got better mileage (about 2 mpg).

Otherwise, i'd say you're not far off. If it's any consolation, I was
disappointed with the consumption as well. I think the culprit here is
vehicle weight. These little buggers are pretty heavy for such small
cars.

Hello,

Perhaps someone can help me out. I have just bought a '99 A4
1.8T
and I am very happy with it in every way except one.... its fuel
consumption. Over the last 4 tanks I have got only 28-29MPG and this
was
with very easy driving, no major town work and no excessive cold
starts. I
had expected more like 35+, the car does not drive, idle or run with
anything that would indicate a problem and the last test showed the CO2
and
PPM to be very good.

	My question is:

1) Is this normal for the car? and if so why so bad for such a small
engine?
2) Are there any common faults that could be giving me this?

Thanks in advance,
Shane
Ireland.
