It seems that most people experienced similar failures as what you described, but mine was opposite, hot = OK, cold = missing lines...

My dealer replaced the entire instrument cluster on my ex-'01.5 A4 under warranty, the original survived for 2 years and a month.  The IC display on my '01.5 S4 is now 2.5 years old, seems to be holding up fine (knock on wood!!)
