[A4] Bouncy, squeek.........

Can you guess what my problem is?  My '97 A4 Quattro w/1.8t has started making squeeky, squeeky sounds from under the front end. With 114k miles I know it is soon time to replace something. I think it is a worn ball joint or something. Could ya'll give me some direct experiences or things to check and verify for pin-pointing the problem. And also, what upgrade (performance wise) should I do at this point if I want to do. The stock handling has always been very good but if I can replace with something else I would like to know.
