I took the 1.8t head off in my garage and replaced the valves due to the
timing belt tensioner failure. I did not go inside the bottom end,
except for cleaning up the piston crowns.
The new tensioner came compressed form the factory. It was held in the
compressed state by the wire pin with a loop, inserted through a set of
corresponding holes, very much like a grenade. Once installed, in order
to release it you pull the pin out, also very much like a grenade.
I guess you can compress the tensioner and re-insert a suitable pin once
again.
