Phil, I had similar problems when I first got my stage 1 installed too. I
ended up tracing the problem to a leaky vacuum line attached to the front of
the inlet manifold. I don't buy the gas argument from anybody now, as I've
tried everything in mine including 89 octane and there had been very little
difference amongst Chevron, Shell, Arco, Citgo, you name it. However, spark
plugs can make a big difference. Even if the plugs look OK, are they gapped
properly? I had a real pain a few months ago with poor performance above
3500-4000 rpm, due to worn plugs. I put some copper tri-tips in and the
problem disappeared and the performance improved.
HTH,
Nick

On my 01' 1.8T Avant Tip (50k mi), I had an APR 1bar chip installed about 2
months ago. First off, it was great and really made up for the power
robbing Tip - from 3k upwards, it just wants to pull hard. After about 3
weeks of daily driving (~800mi), I noticed it would ping badly. It never
pinged before. It only happens when I'm in 2nd or 3rd, at about
2000-2800rpm, just when I come upon a decent hill. I've put in a 710N
bypass valve, checked the plugs, new air filter, new fuel filter, and I've
tried different 91 octane gas - Unocal 76, Chevron, Shell (best so far).
Gas and fuel filter both helped slightly. APR suggested the new fuel
filter, but didn't make any other suggestions (i.e. cooler spark plugs).
Unfortunately, APR hasn't been terribly helpful. I realize that my
situation (big hills, high boost turbo, automatic) is not exactly ideal.
Has anyone else experienced this, any suggestions?
By the way, that 12pt screw holding the fuel filter strap is a real pain in
the a$$.
Thanks,
-Phil
