These are different generations of platform for Audi/VW "B" platform cars (mid-size).
B3 - Audi 80/90/Coupe ('88-'92)
B4 - Audi 80/90/Coupe/Cabriolet ('93-'94/5)
B5 - Audi A4 ('95/6-'00/1) and VW Passat ('97-'01)
B5.5 - VW Passat ('01.5-current)
B6 - Audi A4 ('01/02-'05)
B7 - Audi A4 ('05.5-??)
Note that there is also a chassis classification:
89 - all B3 cars
8D - all B5 cars
8E - B6 and B7 cars
