My ex-A4 ('01.5 1.8t) did similar things since 1 year old. On cold start, I can hear some extra noise from the engine as soon as it catches, usually last for only half a second or so. Of course the dealer couldn't duplicate it due to odd circumstances, but I've read that it maybe caused by the cam chain tensioner or something like that not getting oil at startup after sitting for a while. I posted this some time in '02 and there was a discussion on it. I think a few people have had their dealer replaced it under warranty and cured the problem, mine didn't but it wasn't too bad at the time.
Did you start hearing that sound after the t-belt job? Cause new tensioner and water pump can be defective too, pretty rare but it can happen. But judging from your "sound description" it doesn't sound like those components are going bad.
