I haven't seen an answer on this one, so I'll give you
my thoughts.  Most of this is generic Audi stuff, and
may not directly apply to your wife's A6.

Some Audis use a charcoal canister to catch fumes for
the EPA. Occasionally, the cansiter becomes full{?}
and the fumes leak, causing the smell.

Some Audis use rubber cushions in the clamps that hold
the fuel lines underneath the car. The rubber holds
moisture, which causes the lines to rust inside the
clamps. The leaks start as pinholes, so you don't see
the leak (or a puddle), but you can smell the fumes.

Too obvious (and newer Audis generate a Check Engine
warning), but is the gas cap on? Tight?

The Audifans archives should have more detail, if you
need it. Search on: gas smell, or fuel leak.
