I remember when I first bought my audi (Dec 2002) and the ABS kicked in, and I had NO idea what it was. :)
It definitely is sensitive, but it works well. All you have to do is realize that you need to really push hard on the brake pedal once it kicks in---like grab the steering wheel and do and try to put your foot through the floor hard. There have been times early on where I would just drop the car (manual 1999.5 a4) into a low gear and practically stall my car out to stop it because I was always a little taken aback by the ABS and didn't really trust it.
This year is a little different. I generally will keep my car in a lower gear when it's very slick/ snowy out so my rpms hover around 3000-35000. I also have different tires: Michellin Pilot Sport A/S. It is now extremely rare (maybe twice) that the ABS has kicked in this winter. I would *definitely* recommend these tires. Great in dry, wet, and extremely good in snow.
