I had a very similiar problem happen to my old A4 (97). It was under
warranty so I took it back and they fixed it. One of the hoses had
gotten disconnected, it was actually before the pump because when I
poured the fluid in it ran out of the reservoir and went right on the
ground.

So maybe mine was not exactly a similiar problem. I have 60k on my
2001 A4 now and (knocks on wood) I haven't had as many problems with
this one as I did with my 97, and I traded that one in at 55k (with a
mastere cylinder in need of replacing).
