I have been very happy with a Yakima rack that I used on my 'ex' 98.5 
A4, mainly to carry my canoe. I just had to change the Q-Clips and make 
a few minor adjustments in order to be able to use it on my '02 A4. 
Thule also makes a rack system that will fit. I chose the Yakima because 
the round bars allow the positioning of accessories (i.e. Gunwale 
brackets) at any angle. As usual, YMMV.
