There is a posting on VW Vortex Audi A4 list with a link to a draft of the
proposed class action settlement. It appears that the included years are the 97
to 99 model years with 1.8l turbo engines with AEB codes. There are also some
2000 model year A4 AEB engines but I am not sure if they are included. The 97
to 99 AEB engines have a very weak timing belt tensioner and damper that has
been updated with a new design as found on the 2000 model year ATW engine. The
original AEB tensioner, damper and timing belt should be changed as soon as
possible not waiting for a normal service interval. I changed mine at 42,000
miles and could see some distress in the tensioner and damper assembly. The
original tensioner and damper are no longer available as VW/Audi service parts but
the original 152 tooth timing belt still is. The updated belt has 153 teeth to
accommodate the improved tensioner.
