Yeah I was able to use a puller (pusher?) that drove/pushed the actual ball joint shaft up out of the housing for one of the arms, but the other - the axle was in the way...so pickle fork it was and yes I did slightly tear the boot. Seeing how these control arms are disposable anyway I'll make a small effort to seal the boot back (read: hack job) and just replace the C/A later. here in CO we don't have lots of moisture so the joint may actually last a while with a small hole....

I would not use the pickle fork if you do not want to destroy the ball joint boot. There is a very high likelihood that the fork will cut the boot as you drive in. I would recommend that you rent a small puller or even buy one from a Snap On or other similar professional tools dealer.
