Sounds like it's leaking past the center portion of the valve cover gasket.

I don't know why it would leak there.
Not too hard to do. My A4 1.8T had some "plumbing" in the way. And I needed some sealant for the new one. (You can see my website listed in my other post for some details).
It's probably worth getting a manual. I have the official Bentley manual on CD for my A4 (B6). Not too expensive on Ebay. Your 1998 is probably has a cheaper Haynes manual available.

Subject: [A4] Oil Leak
Guys,
My 1998 A4 VR6-30v seems to have developed what looks like a valve cover
gasket oil leak on the passenger side of the engine. When changing myb
plugs last weekend I pulled #2 plug and it was coated in oil. Not the tip,
but the top where the ceramic is. I knew I had a leak (oil on the floor)
but didn't know it was this high up. However, I can't seem to precisely
locate it. I have taken all the shrouds off as well as the belly pan and am
going to clean them up with degreaser and hopefully that will pinpoint the
problem. In the meantime, does anyone have any clues as to what would leak
in the #2 plug hole? And what does it take to change the valve cover
gasket?
Thanx!
Richard
