I finally had a chance to install a new clutch switch.  Outrageous cost, 
IMO, = $Cdn38 + taxes, after 10% discount from the local VW dealer. 
There is no Audi dealer nearby & the same switch is used in Passats. 
That got my cruise control working properly again.

In the interim, I got the cruise working again, 'simulating' a 
non-pressed clutch by shorting the contacts in the connector together. 
FWIW, the ECU had detected the short by setting an 'implausible' signal 
DTC from the clutch switch.
