[A4] A4 funky instrument cluster display

Agreed on the cluster.  Mine's been messed up for years and I just live with
it.  <sigh>  It also goes almost completely blank in the summer heat - in
the winter I can use it quite well.
As far as the timing belt goes, if you don't know if it has been changed or
not then assume it hasn't and put a new one in.  If you are good with tools
and have worked on cars before, you can change the belt in a weekend.
 However, this is not a first timers job and if you have any doubts about
your ability let someone else do it.  A bad timing belt can make very
expensive noises very quickly.  I had a independent mechanic fix mine (along
with changing some seals) and I think it cost around $1k, but I don't really
remember.  I'd say your looking at about $750 to have someone else do it or
about $350 in parts to do it yourself.
