Your 4 wheels will almost never be turning the same speed, even if
you are going exactly straight. Even brand new tires with slightly
different pressures will have different rolling radius. This is why
we have differentials instead of just connecting everything together,
to make up for when things aren't turning at exactly the same speed.

The short form is that we had a tire blow out on a trip, and the guy at the
Sears (only place we could find on the Sunday in rural Montana) gave us the
line about replacing all 4 tires. I had them do only one anyway, and
called Audi about it. Their recommendation was that as long as the tires
were of the same size, there would be no problem running a new tire with 3
older tires.
