you know looking at the lock issue, i've always wondered why audi used
air powered locks in the first place? seems like a bad idea. it would
make an interesting subplot in a steampunk novel..

you might try spending the effort on converting to electric locks -
any good car audio / alarm shop will have an entry level alarm or
keyless entry module you can use with 4 solenoids to mount in the
doors.

they're really easy to mount, easy to wire, and the module [alarm or
just keyless] will be pretty easy to integrate into the factory alarm
and features. this was a daily job in the shop i used to work at, and
we rarely got the solenoids back defective. i converted every non
power vw that i had. what a joy, going from manual locks to power
locks.

we even did a few power window coversions. those are a little
trickier, but same principal. but re the locks, you may find redoing
the whole system puts the pneumatic demon to rest once and for all?
and isn't really much more work or money.
