[A4] Heater fan removal?

The fan motor brushes seem to be dead on my 96 A4. Before I dive in to replace them, does anyone have been-there-done-that suggestions for access and removal of the fan? Unlike my prior 4000 quattro, it looks like the heater can is not accessable on the A4 from the engine bay side. I am thinking I will need to access the fan from beneath the passengers side of the dash. Will AC components be in the way for this approach? Does heater core need to be removed?
Thanks-
