yes but the a/c does wok the motor harder making it run hotter. condenser
fan helps some

The Aux fan pulls air over the a/c condensor to help cool it down. It
really doesn't impact a car overheating. If the aux fan doesn't work, you'll have
issues with the high pressure switch bidding farewell and your a/c will not
blow ice cold unless you're moving.
Also, be sure and check the level of the coolant. If it's empty, and you
get an air pocket in the system, you might see a jump in temps while sitting.

Turning on the A/C should automatically turn on the aux electric fan, if it
doesn't you could overheat (I guess). Its very easy to check, just turn on
the A/C and listen for the fan noise to increase. You might want to open
the hood and directly observe the fan, just don't stick your hand in there
as the fan can come on at any time and not just when the car is on.

P.S. I had to change my aux fan in my '98 A4 V6. It wasn't too bad really,
mostly just un-clipping the wireing harness in 4-5 places and removing one
screw (I think). I think there is a pretty good write up in the AudiWorld
tech section.
