Hi All,
Resolved!
Got a Vag Com onto it. It wasn't in limp mode at all. Limp mode is where it
goes into gear 3 and stays there. All the gears showing up as selector is
probably a sign of a fault code in transmition.
So here is what I got:
VAG-COM Version: Release 311.2-N
Control Module Part Number: 8D0 927 156 A
Component and/or Version: AG5 01V 2.6l2V RDW D58
Software Coding:
Work Shop Code:
2 Faults Found:
00293 - Multi-function Switch (F125)
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
00526 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
27-00 - Please Register/Activate
A bit of googling turned up that I probably have some gunk in some magical
plug in the bowels of the car
For those interested:

ON that note, anyone know if you have to delve so deep into the car on a 96
A4?
cheers
