I just had some tranny work done on my 2001 tip quattro. I read the other long reply to this . . . so . . . To flush or not to flush?

I've also read a lot on it, as Euro Auto Trannys have always scared me (I've replaced a few before). For my A4, it turned out I had a leaky rear seal (where drive shaft exits out back of tranny to go to rear), and a cracked tranny oil pan. So I was forced to flush the fluid when they replaced the pan. The drain is welded onto the heavy sheetmetal pan, and thus the threaded hole for the plug goes up into the pan, about 1/2". Typically, you can drain the fluid but it'll leave that 1/2" of fluid in the tranny pan bottom. The tranny inherently grinds all the time and metal deposits are there. Much of the common wisdom is to not disturb the muck stuck there. OR to constantly flush some muck out, by changing often. It seems to me that the BETTER way would be to remove the pan, and clean the muck out - which is what inadvertently happened to me, via shiny clean new tranny pan. Now that I have a fresh lease on fluid life (knock on wood), I'll be changing more regularly.

Of course, everyone will decide for themselves on what to do.

As for AAMCO, I've decided they serve up garbage. I would at least want an Audi shop that uses Audi Tip fluid.

Good luck Kent.

1999 A4 V6 with Tiptronic -- the transmission is starting to act all funky.

Sometimes it acts normal.

Sometimes, when taking off from a stop, the engine will rev like you're slipping
a manual transmission clutch, and the car will take off, but more slowly, as
though the clutch is slipping.

Sometimes, when coming to a stop, it will go Ka-Lunk! real badly, like being hit
from behind at 2-3 MPH.

Sometimes, when taking off from a stop, it will rev like it is in neutral, then
Ka-Lunk, it will bang into 1st.

Sometimes the PRN54321 indicator on the dash, which normally lights up whatever
gear it is in, will light up all the letters/numbers. When that happens, it
seems like its in 3rd gear; from a start it feels like you're slipping the
clutch on a manual in car, taking off from 3rd. Moving the shift lever to +/-
manual mode does not switch it into manual mode; all the lights stay lit.
Turning off the car and restarting it resets the lights to act normal.

With the A4 Tiptronic, there is no dipstick to check for fluid. It all happens
with a drain/fill plug on the transmission pan.

Suggestions? I'm thinking of taking it to Aamco for a transmission fluid flush.
(Torching the car is nice thought, but is not an option.)
