Now help with getting the console out, but it sounds similar to my '97
A42.8q cup holders...  I've had mine "break" several times and was able to
fix them without removing them.  In my case the pieces disconnected from
each-other and I was able to snap them back together in-place...

Hopefully yours is no worse than that...
