[A4] Climate control

I have owned a 98 A4 for close to five years now.  Love the car, get
aggravated when the bills rack up for parts and labor- spent close to $1500
for timing belt service, and an air conditioning compressor recently.
However, it is what it is.

Anyway, can someone explain why the air con kicks on whenever you hit AUTO
on the climate control? It's 38 degrees outside, and the temp was set at 70
(in the teens last night).
