The '97s are the only A4's that had the sports seats as part of the sport package. After that they were a stand alone option that wasn't ordered very much.
'99.5 was the last year for a throttle cable and the first year of the newer dash design.
2001 cars came with slightly more power from the factory.
Pick the one that's been maintained the best, as the changes from year to year are slight.

I've been very happy with my 2001. Just make sure that it's been treated
well. I think the condition is way more important than the year. Look for
one that has used the large (diesel ) oil filter and has been on high
quality synthetic oil for a long time -- mine had its engine replaced under
warranty while using the small filter and a long interval between oil
changes.
I think the 2001 has the nicest dash/interior and I believe had slightly
higher HP than previous years.

I may be n the search fr a B5 quattro,
Are there years I should focus my attention on, and years I should avoid?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Regards,
Doug (in the market for a Pacific Northwest or West Coast A4 quattro)
