I've seen A8 engines on e-bay for about $2000. I think the mechanic's
suggestion is right. You might get the engine out and tear it apart yourself
(can't hurt if you have another lined up). Maybe debris is cought up in the
bad valve.

my mechanic says my wife's 97 a-8 blew a spark plug out and that cylinder
now has zero compression as a valve seems to be stuck or bent. he is
claiming a used or rebuilt engine is the best way to go if we choose to
repair it. he thinks opening her up would be more expensive in the long run.
any thoughts?
